About the event
Join Lawrence Pride Tuesday, Sept. 5th at Liberty Hall for a showing of the classic documentary Paris is Burning.
Paris is Burning captured the end of the Golden Era of New York’s ballroom competition scene during the 80s. The competitions gave birth to the art form we now call Vogue and much of the language that has become common to queer culture gained popularity during this time, including houses, shade and mother. The film particularly explores the lives and experiences of black and latino/a people during this period. Paris is Burning is one of the most important explorations of modern queer history in America.
Jarron Lewis, aka Chay D Boots, teaches Vogue classes at the Lawrence Arts Center and performs drag throughout the area. Lewis will lead the audience through an Intro to Vogue class before the movie.
